Major water conservancy projects are important means to strengthen the prevention and control of floods and droughts, optimize the allocation of water resources, improve the aquatic environment, and promote the coordinated development of river basins. The latest data from the Ministry of Water Resources shows that in 2018, in the construction of major water conservancy projects for water-saving water supply, the national water conservancy construction investment was 687.27 billion yuan, of which the central government invested 155.46 billion yuan.

A number of landmark projects, including the Diversion Project from the Yangtze River to the Huai River, the Central Yunnan Water Diversion Project, the Dajiangxia Water Conservancy Hub of the Xijiang River, and the Chushandian Reservoir from the Huaihe River, have begun construction. 23 major water conservancy projects have been completed in succession, effectively improving the water safety guarantee capacity of the river basin.
